Charlie Chaplin Tour of London
Welcome to the Charlie Chaplin tour of London, as hosted by Brit Icon Tours. Before he was an icon on screen, young Charlie Chaplin started life in the poverty-stricken area of Kennington in London, at the end of the 19th century. He moved from house to workhouse, making his stage debut in London, before ultimately rising to fame in America. On this 2 hour walking tour, you will walk through the streets of Kennington, and discover the early life of one of cinema's greatest pioneers and the historic neighbourhood that inspired his genius.
Tour Highlights
- The site of Chaplin’s most lived in home
- The pub where Chaplin saw his father for the last time
- The theatre where Charlie rose to fame in “Sherlock Holmes”
- The streets of London that Charlie would have walked, before he left for America
The Charlie Chaplin Tour of London offers a unique perspective on the life and legacy of one of the world’s most beloved comedians. Kennington, located in the London Borough of Lambeth, was the birthplace of Chaplin and the area where he spent much of his childhood, living in absolute poverty.
On this two-hour walking tour, you will discover the background of one of the most iconic comedic actors of the 20th century, and how he rose to fame.
The tour begins at Kennington Tube Station, where you will meet your English-speaking guide before heading off through the various locations that played their part in Chaplin’s boyhood and how they influenced his future career.
Some locations have old cobbled streets so please wear comfortable footwear. Onwards, you will take a short bus journey across the River Thames, towards the glittering West End, filled with famous theatres and glamourous hotels that played a prominent part in Chaplin’s career and adult life.
You will then finish in the park at Leicester Square, in central London, surrounded by our iconic cinemas. It is also worth noting that since Chaplin’s birth and death, London has been destroyed and rebuilt many times, so some featured locations will not be the original buildings they once were. Thankfully, your guide has a picture book to demonstrate and detail the tour locations, before their renovations or destruction.
If you have any questions about Chaplin, or general questions of London, feel free to ask your guide. As you will be taking a short bus journey, all customers must have either: an Oyster card with at least £3 on it, a contactless credit/debit card per person, or a Travelcard ticket valid in Zones 1-2. Children aged 11 and under travel for free.
This tour goes ahead come rain or shine, so best to bring an umbrella in case the weather becomes
